We looked at pollution the air and in the water. To show what happens when vehicles continue to pump out gases into the atmosphere we created smog in a bottle. Using a match to represent the fumes from exaust pipes, we soon had a very dark and very smelly cloud in a jar, while another jar had a beautifully clear cloud (and not smelly!).
The problem is that all this pollution will eventually end up in the water. So, we also looked at ways to clean water, including a sand filter. This was made with a bottle to serve as a funnel, and then add a layer of pebbles, a layer of course sand and then a layer of fine sand. Running dirty water through this filter is actually very effective at cleaning the water.
We ended by making a pollution catcher, which is nothing more than a paper plate covered in Vaseline. However, this simple "device" is very good at catching all the dirt in the air that WA may not see... But it's there!
